Collapse of I-5 bridge in Washington State: no fatalities, many questions
The collapse of a 'functionally obsolete' bridge on I-5 in Washington State plunged three, later rescued, into icy water. It's also reviving a debate on how to fund billions in infrastructure repair. Three people were rescued from icy water after a section of the Interstate 5 bridge collapsed Thursday evening 60 miles north of Seattle, raising the prospect of a renewed debate over funding critical infrastructure repairs across the country. Barack Obama defends ‘just war’ using drones
Written by Mark Mardell/ BBC NEWSWritten on Friday, 24 May 2013 13:48
President Barack Obama has defended the use of drones in a "just war" of self-defence against deadly militants and a campaign that had made America safer. In a wide-ranging speech on a programme shrouded in secrecy, he said there must be "near certainty" that no civilians would die in such strikes. Obama's proposals were welcomed in the two countries most affected by drone strikes (AP), Pakistan and Yemen, although Pakistan says the strikes should stop completely. Analysis "The enduring impact of Mr Obama's speech will not be what he says, but whether the new policies… -
Ahmadinejad to Challenge Aide's Ban From Election
Written by Council on Foreign RelationsWritten on Thursday, 23 May 2013 10:25
Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says he will ask Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, to reverse a ban (Reuters) preventing Ahmadinejad aide Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei from running in next month's presidential poll. Analysis "Even if Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei, the candidate most closely associated with Ahmadinejad, is allowed to run, it is uncertain whether or not he will be able to rally the beneficiaries of the populist policies followed in…
